Sunday 21st May saw over 400 people come to Salford Quays to compete on a dry day but bright day in the 2017 annual Salford Dragon Boat Festival.
20 teams raced in a series of three-boat heats with each team racing in different lanes and against different opponents. After each race the results went up on the Race the Dragon Ltd. score board for all to see and compare. Dragon boating is quick to pick up and very progressive in nature so by race two, teams really understood what the race involves and by round three, first timers and returning teams were competing on equal footing. This meant that until the final qualifying race has been completed, the qualifiers for the Grand Final would not be known for sure.
Each team had three qualifying races, where their best time only was used for qualification into the Grand Final where the top four teams would go through. The Grand Final was the only race of the day where all four dragon boats were raced together and (as expected), the most exciting race of the day.
The forth fastest qualifier was dragon boat first timers Dragon Me Under from Adidas with 0.56.20. Third fastest qualifier was Y Club who last year were denied the opportunity to compete in the 2016 Grand Final by the winners of the very last qualifying heat of the day.
The second fastest qualifier was TalkTalk Revolution who qualified in their third race with 0.55.52, whilst out in front and with the fastest qualifying time of the day were the Rowbocops, with their second round time of 0.50.91.
The team captains were called up the Race Control where a draw for lanes was made and once each captain had drawn their selection, the boats were loaded and paddled away. In Lane 1: Robocops. Lane 2: TalkTalk Revolution, Lane 3: Dragon Me Under and Lane 4: Y Club.
In a thrilling race with people all along the dock cheering on the competitors, it was TalkTalk Revolution who took an early lead in the first few strokes, followed very quickly by both Robocops and Dragon Me Under and just behind them, Y Club. Very soon through, the Robocops started to pull away and by the race mid point had gained a half boat’s advantage. Just behind them both TalkTalk Revolution and Dragon Me Under were having a great battle for second pace as the Y Club just moved into forth place.
As they reached the finish line, it was the Robocops (boat 1) who crossed the line in first with a new fastest time of 0.50.27 and an almost a complete boat length's advantage over second place new commer’s Dragon Me Under (boat 3), whilst almost half a second behind them was TalkTalk Revolution (boat 2) with 0.54.00 just marginally ahead of Y Club (boat 4) who crossed the line with 0.54.39. It is worth noting that all four teams beat their personal best from the qualifying heats.
