Sunday 22th May saw over 400 people come to Salford Quays to compete on a bright day in the 2018 annual Salford Dragon Boat Festival.
19 teams raced in a series of three-boat heats with each team racing in different lanes and against different opponents. After each race the results went up on the Race the Dragon Ltd. score board for all to see and compare. Dragon boating is quick to pick up and very progressive in nature so by race two, teams really understood what the race involves and by round three, first timers and returning teams were competing on equal footing. This meant that until the final qualifying race has been completed, the qualifiers for the Grand Final would not be known for sure.
Each team had three qualifying races, where their best time only was used for qualification into the Grand Final where the top four teams would go through. The Grand Final was the only race of the day where all four dragon boats were raced together and (as expected), the most exciting race of the day.
The forth fastest qualifier was Smasher the Devourer, the team from Boss Agencies Ltd with their third round time of 1.01.04. Third fastest qualifier was Captain Coe’s Crew from L'Oreal, also with their third round time of 1.00.20.
The Derian Destroyers from PRP and with their second round time of 0.59.83 were second fastest qualifyers, leaving Robbo Dingy Rapids from Pro-Fit Personal Training Manchester with the fastest time of the qualifying heats, 0.55.26.
The team captains were called up the Race Control where a draw for lanes was made and once each captain had drawn their selection, the boats were loaded and paddled away. In Lane 1: Smasher the Devourer. Lane 2: The Derian Destroyers, Lane 3: Captain Coe’s Crew and in Lane 4: Robbo Dingy Rapids.
In a thrilling Grand Final race with people all along the dock cheering on the competitors, it was Smasher the Devourer who took an early lead in the first few strokes, followed very quickly by both The Derian Destroyers in 2 and Robbo Dingy Rapids in 4.
At the half way point, it was still a three horse race with Smasher the Devourer in Lane 1 just marginally ahead of The Derian Destroyers and Robbo Dingy Rapids as Captain Coe’s Crew faded into forth place.
In the final stages however there was a change of leader as Robbo Dingy Rapids in Lane 4 surged ahead and crossed the line half a boat length up on Smasher the Devourer, who in turn were quater of a boat length up on The Derian Destroyers in Lane 2.
The final times were:
1st placed: Robbo Dingy Rapids with a NEW fastest time of the day ... 0.53.39.
2nd placed: Smasher the Devourer with a six second improvement on their best time ... 0.55.32
3rd placed: The Derian Destroyers who also had their best time of the day ... 0.55.95
4th placed: Captain Coe’s Crew with 1.04.50
